Celebrating Fatherhood
TAPCE would like to wish all families a Happy Father’s day. This Sunday, the 17th, fatherhood was celebrated in many families. It is hoped that the appreciation for fatherly parenting will help bring families grow closer and better able to address the challenges and opportunities of the education system
Today’s family dynamics from authoritarian to egalitarian provides a wide spectrum of parenting roles for fathers. Popular media seemingly tends to increasingly narrow this role to a comic caricature. Promotion of negative stereo types about fathers has even been seen to be commercially acceptable. However recent campaigns against such negative advertising are beginning to have an impact. 1 The modeling of gender roles within the family provides children with a practical example of what works today and what does not. By celebrating fatherhood this weekend we expose the true value of Fathers.
Science is currently promoting the differences between the sexes. This position has become so profitable that suspect results too often go unchallenged. The biological differences may pale in comparison to the socialization of boys and girls. How a father interacts with his children is being espoused to have many more far reaching consequences. 2 Evidence based research needs to be critically assessed to ensure it is relevant, culturally applicable and based on more than isolated anecdotal evidence.
Parenting is very much a skill that passes down the lessons of previous generations. The tendency to compensate for self perceived childhood shortcomings can help avoid past mistakes. By honouring one’s own Parents successes we transmit a rich inheritance to our children. 4
